Total Defence Day 2026

Imagine a world without power, where basic electrical appliances such as fans and lights are rendered inoperative. That was what our students experienced on 11 February during the Power Disruption Simulation Exercise.

On that day, the students attended their lessons as usual in a classroom with fans and lights switched off – simulating a power outage. This experience served to provide a glimpse of what nationwide power outage in the early 1960s felt like. The following day, the Form Teachers led the students in reflecting on the experience they had during the simulation exercise, consolidating their learning, sharing insights gained and connecting the exercise to real-world preparedness and resilience.

Prior to the start of our school's annual Total Defence Day (TDD) recess activities, the students watched a video message on TDD delivered by the Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, Mr K. Shanmugam. Our confident CCE Ambassadors then shared with the school the objectives of TDD commemoration and generated enthusiasm for the upcoming recess activities.

Before participating in the TDD Info Hunt during the recess activities on 12 and 13 February, students undertook self-directed learning on the six pillars of Total Defence through an assignment on SLS.

The anticipation for the TDD Info Hunt was palpable on the actual days as students collaborated in groups of three to five, with one team member operating an iPad whilst the remaining members searching for answers to questions through the Junyuan Village.

1. Catch it! At this station, students viewed a one-minute video presentation and endeavoured to identify the correct answers on Economic and Psychological Defence before keying in their responses on the iPad. Through this activity, students learnt how they can play a part in their daily lives through actively saving money and resources. The importance of showing national pride was reinforced at this station too.

2. Search It! At this station, each group developed strategies to locate information near the CCE Board in the canteen to respond to the iPad-based questions. Students not only developed teamwork skills, but also gained understanding of the significance of strengthening social cohesion (Social Defence), maintaining vigilance against misinformation and scams, and upholding cyber wellness standards (Digital Defence).

3. Find it!At this station, students practised communication skills as they approached PSG members to obtain answers to iPad questions on Military and Civil Defence. Through these interactions, students developed understanding of Singapore's defence imperatives and emergency preparedness.

4. Our SG Avatars served as a reward station for students who successfully completed all iPad questions. Utilising advanced AI technology, students digitally transformed themselves into military personnel, police officers and firefighters. This gamified experience conveyed meaningful messages about public service and civic responsibility.

These activities, with the steadfast support of our school's committed Parent Support Group, transformed the JY Village into a centre of discovery and engagement.

This experience left our students highly engaged and equipped with enhanced knowledge. They now recognize that defending Singapore encompasses more than military capability – it requires every citizen to contribute towards maintaining our nation's strength, security and unity. Yes!
