What is Education and Career Guidance?
Education and Career Guidance (ECG) assists students in discovering their sense of purpose in life. By fostering self-awareness and encouraging self-directed learning, ECG supports students in cultivating a growth mindset, adaptability, and resilience. This enables them to seize future opportunities and recognise the importance of diverse careers.
The Goals of ECG are to support students in:
- Discovering purpose - Who am I?
Nurture students’ self-awareness to support them in discovering how they can meaningfully play a part in their community. - Exploring opportunities - Where do I want to go?
Develop students’ self-directedness and confidence to explore and leverage education and career opportunities while respecting the value of all occupations. - Staying relevant - How do I get there?
Build students’ adaptability and resilience to embrace the need for lifelong learning.
ECG lessons are integrated into the FTGP (Form-Teacher Guidance Period) in schools to help students understand their interests, abilities, and career aspirations. These lessons use activities and resources like the MySkillsFuture portal to guide students in making informed decisions about their education and future career paths.
What ECG lessons cover
- Self-discovery: Helping students become aware of their strengths, interests and passions.
- Education and career exploration: Teaching about different jobs, industries and educational pathways.
- Decision-making skills: Developing the ability to make informed choices about their secondary school options and future goals.
- Future-readiness: Fostering resilience, adaptability and a lifelong learning disposition.
How ECG lessons are delivered
- Integrated into FTGP: ECG is a core component of the FTGP curriculum.
- Activities: Lessons include classroom activities and role-playing
- Digital resources: Students use online portals like MySkillsFuture to explore their interests and learn about different careers.
- School events: JYPS organises hands-on experiences such as ECG Circles, ECG LJs and Secondary School Fair to supplement and complement our students’ development to be Future-Ready earners and Leaders of Characters.
